Three Prairie Central High School students had a positive experience attending a leadership program event known as RYLA.

The weekend activity, organized by the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards committee is for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors where students develop leadership and team building skills while having fun. This year’s RYLA was held April 4-6 at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello for Rotary District 6490.

Local participants included Addi Livengood, Haiden Willis and Rheagan Aberle. All three told the Fairbury Rotary Club about their experience.

Those attending heard from a number of speakers – some of which were from a small town and younger just like these students. The three learned it is alright to be your own person and step out of your comfort zone. They were also told to go above and beyond and do more than you have to in life.

On the final day, the senior group was presented with an alumni pin and they had the chance to experience activities such as zip lining and rock climbing. Juniors focused on decision making and how to dress for interviews. Someone from University of Illinois Extension talked ethics. It was noted kids from smaller towns had different views than those from bigger ones.

Organized by clubs or districts, RYLA allows those participating to learn new skills through civic engagement along with personal and professional development opportunities. Young leaders are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to make real change locally and globally.
