Popejoy tradition continues

The second generation of Popejoys have taken over ownership of Popejoy Plumbing, Heating and Electric with locations in Fairbury, Pontiac and Dwight.

Dustin Popejoy is president while his brother, Beau, serves as vice president. The siblings are no strangers to the plumbing industry as they have grown up around the business.

“We took some pictures in the front yard and Dad said, ‘I think I’m done,’” Beau laughed, referring to his father Ray Popejoy who retired from the family business.

The family had been working on the transition for quite a while, although it came a bit sooner than they initially thought.

“We’ve been preparing for this day for a long time and are looking to continue the same things we’ve always done,” Beau said.

With the brothers each owning 50 percent of the business, things are still business as usual around the office. Ray even occasionally stops in for morning meetings and is around at the end of the day.

Dustin remembers being involved during grade school by sweeping the floors and putting parts away.

“I did the school work program during high school and after that went full time,” Dustin explained. “I’ve learned a lot and had good teachers.”

Problem solving has always been a strength of Dustin’s as he recalls going out in the field with his dad and uncle Greg Popejoy. Getting work accomplished at the end of the day makes Dustin feel good.

Beau shares similar memories of growing up at Popejoy Plumbing. In fact, his lifelong goal has been to follow in his father’s footsteps and he hopes the next generation follows and keeps the business going.

“As soon as you could get out of school, you’re coming to work and learning the trade,” recalled Beau.

Ray and Greg initially worked for Weber Plumbing and Heating for a number of years before things materialized with Popejoy Plumbing in the 1980s. The number of employees eventually increased as the company employs 50 individuals today.

“Our work radius is roughly 40 miles,” said Dustin.

In addition to the plumbing, heating and electrical work, Popejoy does excavating and has added a water treatment division. They even clean gutters – so no job is too big or small.

More information about the business can be found online at: www.popejoyinc.com or by stopping by one of their area locations.
