PC FFA shines at nationals

It was another successful National FFA Convention for Prairie Central once again.

Hannah Miller was the national champion in the area of swine production entrepreneurship.

“It was really cool when I came off stage, I was actually really shocked,” Miller told Fairbury News. “I knew I had tough competitors and they were all older than me.”

The Food Science team was reserve national champion. Team members were Kamber Kilgus, Kaylee Skaggs, Lily Schaffer and Tyler Young.

“This was the first time Prairie Central has done Food Science in a while,” recalled Skaggs. “We had eight different parts to our contest.”

Agricultural Communications received reserve national champion with team members Addison Huber, Abbie Bachtold, Maddie Roth and Grace Lemenager.

“It was a little different this year for me because I’m now a freshman in college so it looks a little different in terms of preparation,” admits Lemenager.

Lemenager said it took more self-discipline to Zoom with teammates and make practice videos.

“I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Huber enjoyed spending time with her teammates.

“We all four did a different section of the contest and it just went really well,” Huber explained. “We really bonded over this competition.”

Dairy Products was second in the nation, or a reserve national champion. Team members in the top 10 were Samantha Slagel and Hannah Miller. Layne Schaffer and Justin Leman completed the team. Slagel was fourth and Miller was third.

Vet Science received seventh, including Ellie Drach third and Ellie Ellis 12th. Other team members included Rylee Plenert and Skylar Stotler.

“It’s a very hard contest – all vet science and what a veterinary technician would do in real life so it’s a very practical situation,” notes Ellis.

PC FFA was also seventh in dairy cattle evaluation and management. Kaden Davis was 10th overall and top individual. Ty Harms was 14th while Mya Roth and Lainie Welborn completed the team.

The horse judging team of Holden Miller, Hayden Miller, Alex Osborn and Rhet Gehring was a bronze emblem team.

Ag Business Management was a silver emblem and team members included Franklin Rathbun, Preston Plenert, Adri Cottrell and Kelly Wilkey.

Cottrell felt it took plenty of self-discipline since she is a freshman in college in Joliet while also playing golf. While they practiced twice a week, Cottrell believes they did as much as they could to prepare for the contest.

Following last week's National FFA Convention at Indianapolis, a reception was held in honor of the PC FFA members on Saturday afternoon at North Park in Fairbury.
