Painting success for DeWeese

As a kid, Desireé DeWeese’s family was active in Floral Hall at the Fairbury Fair and she thought it was time to participate again this year.

That participation paid off as DeWeese received the judge’s choice award Wednesday for a large painting of a college friend.

“It’s basically just an unfinished portrait number one I guess right now,” DeWeese said.

Believe it or not, the work of art is still unfinished as DeWeese admits she is a perfectionist who pays close attention to detail.

“I work mainly with oils but I’ve got experience with many different materials.”

While DeWeese went to school for art, she did not start getting into the larger paintings of this caliber until later in her education. She feels large canvases can be a bit intimidating since they are a lot to look at when they are blank.

“You just kind of have to play around with it and the great thing with oil painting is there are many, many layers to build it up so you can always correct anything,” DeWeese adds.

DeWeese enjoys being out in the community at places like the Fairbury Fair. She has assisted in Floral Hall this week as participants brought in their fair entries. Photography had a large number of entries and overall participation increased this year compared to last.

“It’s a great group of people we’ve had this year setting everything up.”
