The report of a threat which caused Prairie Central to cancel school ahead of the holiday break on Dec. 20 was a hoax and not from within the school district, according to the superintendent.
A letter released over the weekend by Paula Crane said the report of a threat was not even from within the state.
“Unfortunately, this sort of hoax has become a trend in the U.S.,” states the letter from Crane. “Despite this, we will continue to take every situation seriously and investigate to the fullest extent possible until we can determine that our students and staff are safe.”
The district thanked the Fairbury Police Department for its assistance in the matter and there will be a police presence at Prairie Central High School Monday morning to greet students. The school said this is “out of an abundance of caution” while some may still be apprehensive about the situation despite the district being confident the report in December was not credible.
Crane urges students to still be willing to report suspicious behavior to school personnel as they continue to improve safety procedures and protocols.
