Wayne and Sharon Kurth have been chosen as the 2024 Citizens of the Year in Fairbury.
GFWC IL Fairbury Woman’s Club has been choosing and sponsoring a Citizen of the Year nominee for almost 40 years.
Wayne and Sharon began their volunteering even before they were married and continued endless volunteering hours after they were married on May 25, 1968. They continued volunteer work while raising four daughters Marcie, Jodie, Jamie and Kelly. They also volunteered while being grandparents to 7 grandchildren.
Together they volunteered as church youth leaders, Sunday School teachers of all ages, held many offices at church, vacation bible school coordinator and lead bible studies. They were both softball coaches, headed up chili suppers, Kindergarten reading helpers, volunteered to go on as many field trips as the school would let them, of both their girls and grandchildren, helped the PC band fundraiser by making the spaghetti and serving spaghetti at the suppers and they gave many years to helping with the local food pantry.
Sharon also served as room mother for her girls while they were in school, was a girl scout leader for many years, coordinated Meals on Wheels for 10 yrs and continues delivering meals today, coordinated a group of ladies for funeral lunches and Sharon helped deliver books to residents at our local nursing home.
Wayne served as layman at church, junior league football coach, was a member of Lion’s Club, drove equipment in parades for Caterpillar and Thresherman’s Parade, has helped at Cropsey Pancake Supper, puts golf carts away at night at the local golf course, helps with Christmas Parade, set up precincts as an election technician, enlisted in the Marine Corp for 6 years and has helped a local farmer for 20 years.
Wayne and Sharon also have volunteered in their subdivision. Sharon is an officer on the HOA and Wayne helps each year setting up and taking down the Christmas luminaries that line every street in their subdivision.
“Wayne and Sharon are quite deserving of this title and we thank them for their volunteer service and know they will continue serving the community as long as they are able,” said a news release from the Fairbury Woman’s Club.
A reception is planned to honor Wayne and Sharon on Saturday, November 16 at 2 p.m. in the Activity Room of Fairview Haven Nursing Home. All past Citizen of the Year winners are also invited to attend and the event is open to the public.
Wayne and Sharon will also be riding in the Christmas Parade as the 2024 Citizen of the Year winners.
