Team members and fans celebrate the Hawks winning the Illini Prairie Conference on Tuesday night.

It was a home boys basketball regular season finale Hawk fans will not forget.

Prairie Central defeated Bloomington Central Catholic at a packed PCHS gymnasium 72-66 Tuesday night to win the Illini Prairie Conference outright. This was PC’s first conference title since 2002 and Illini basketball coach Brad Underwood was even there to take it all in.

Dylan Bazzell had 34 points to exceed the 1,000 point barrier while Tyler Curl had 15, Camden Palmore 10 and Drew Fehr with 9.

PC head coach Darin Bazzell said Fehr made a huge difference while Curl and Palmore knocked down some big shots. He was also impressed with his son.

“Dylan played an unbelievable game blow for blow with Certa and had two huge rebounds at the end to help seal that victory,” Bazzell told Fairbury News.

Everyone was happy to see Levi Goad back out on the court.

“Levi came in and got his feet wet and I thought he looked really good,” noted Coach Bazzell.

The Hawks went undefeated in Illini Prairie Conference play at 9-0 and are 25-2 on the season.

“I just couldn’t be more proud of our kids’ effort, never say die and never quit – that’s just kind of how they’ve been since they’ve been little kids,” added Bazzell.

It is a busy week ahead of Regionals for the boys as they travel to Iroquois West Friday night before taking on Plano in a Saturday afternoon matchup. The season finale is the following Thursday on the road at Tri-Valley prior to the postseason. That’s the game Drew Haberkorn is expected to play in.

“To see this environment and them being able to take it all in, that probably is more satisfying than anything,” said Bazzell.

A steady line of kids, their parents and fans lined up at halftime to get autographs and pictures with Coach Underwood from the Fighting Illini. This week’s Illinois basketball game against Minnesota was postponed due to a COVID outbreak in the Golden Gophers program.
