The fine arts at Prairie Central were highlighted during the Fairbury Rotary Club’s weekly meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Music teacher Melissa Nagel reminded the group of several upcoming events including a taco night fundraiser this Friday before the boys basketball game, Feb. 10 Upper Elementary and Junior High band concert, March 3 high school concert, Mar. 12-15 musical, Mar. 31 Junior High and High School concert and May 9 Pops Concert.
Nagel spoke of a new program known as “Drumtastic” which incorporates the mind with music.
“I think they are enjoying it,” she said.
Bucket drumming has also been a part of this and the fourth graders will play fun music in Chenoa this April. The PC music department is considering doing a showcase for Upper Elementary students which would take some pressure off the Pops Concert day. Student artwork would also be displayed.
High school art instructor Casey McCullough also spoke at the meeting, noting everyone has art in them. She said art is very important. Most PC students start with drawing design and the school offers painting, pottery, photography, computer graphics and advanced drawing. Students can also take art appreciation, which is history driven.
“All of the art classes employ a great deal of technology,” McCullogh explained.
The school has an active art guild which goes on college visits and tours artistic landscapes around the area. Also, various art shows in April allow students to compete to win medals.
An art show begins at 4 p.m. May 9 which is the day of the Pops Concert at the high school.
