D2 Court Fund update given

(A letter from Prairie Lands Foundation, image provided)

Mayor David Slagel read a written notice he received from the Prairie Lands Foundation during Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Fairbury City Council.

The Foundation reported they had established a D2 Court Fund for two basketball courts to be built at Marsh Park dedicated to the memories of Dylan Bazzell and Drew Fehr.

Prairie Lands also reported the Foundation will generate a dollar-for-dollar matching contribution of up to $25,000. The matching funds will come from an endowment fund that was bequeathed to Prairie Lands Foundation by John and Tula Wade.

Donations to the fund should have D2 Court Fund in the check memo line. Checks can be mailed to Prairie Lands Foundation at P.O. Box 260 in Fairbury or dropped off at the Bank of Pontiac Bluestem Branch. For more information about the D2 Court Fund matching contributions, people may contact David Hammer at 815-692-4363.

The location of the two new basketball courts at Marsh Park has been changed from the original proposal. The new proposal replaces the existing small court in the northeast corner of Marsh Park with one new larger court. The current large basketball court at the south-central part of Marsh Park will be removed and replaced with a larger one.

During the Public Comments section of the meeting, a local contractor asked for help on a recent job where he moved an existing fence for a homeowner at 713 E. Locust Street. Mayor Slagel recommended the contractor meet with Brett Ashburn, City Superintendent, during regular business hours to resolve the issue.

Brett Ashburn, City Superintendent, reported there will be disruptions on Route 24 next week when the road patching work begins.

Martin Steidinger, Superintendent of Streets & the Fire Department, reported on the progress of renovation work at the Boys & Girls Club.

The Council voted to accept the findings of the recent audit of the city's finances conducted by MCK CPA's & Advisors. The auditor reported the city received a clean and unqualified audit. The auditor complimented the City Council on the excellent results of the audit.

The Council voted to approve continuing an annual contract to maintain the outdoor warning siren system. A request to close streets for the Homecoming Parade on September 29 was also approved.

Quotes are still being received to rehab the downtown sound system, and the project will be voted on at a future meeting.
