Several mentions were made at this week’s regular meeting of the Fairbury City Council of how well the recent Prairie Dirt Classic race went at Fairbury Speedway.
It was noted how the city, residents, businesses, police and other first responders handled the influx of people in the community during that time.
On another note, Police Chief Robert McCormick mentioned that the fair board requested random pass throughs of police officers during the upcoming Fairbury Fair which was agreed to.
Council members voted to increase garbage rates by 75 cents to keep in line with the original increase in the contract with GFL, which currently handles the city’s garbage.
Alderman Gary Norris reported the pool is preparing to close soon and that everything went well this year. Norris gave kudos to Alex Reis for keeping the pool and swim team running smoothly.
The council also discussed lime removal which is a bit higher but it is a three-year contract rather than one and since it goes up every year anyway, it is within the margin of normal increase.
Alderman Jim Tipton asked if the city could request a new survey of the speed limit on Route 24 west, given the number of new businesses which have opened in that area. These openings have taken place since the last time the state checked it.
A request from Livingston County Custodial Services to park a company vehicle on any city street or park to advertise the business was not approved. The city will be asking them to request specific places and times and to resubmit the information for the next council meeting.
