Citizen of Year named

Carmen Gentes, left, honored by the Fairbury Woman's Club Saturday at "A Local Taste."

Fairbury’s 2021 Citizen of the Year was honored during “A Local Taste” over the weekend at Fairbury Speedway.

GFWC Fairbury Woman’s Club announced Carmen Gentes as this year’s honoree. The organization refers to Gentes as community minded and someone who does plenty of behind-the-scenes work. Gentes is a big supporter of the Boys & Girls Club and has led the sports program and coached children.

Information from the Woman’s Club indicates Gentes works at fundraisers and always has good ideas on how to raise money. She also volunteers with the American Red Cross, helping with setup and teardown of the blood drive. Gentes sells tickets at the fair to help the Red Cross and assists with smoke alarm install days.

The big supporter of Prairie Central sports also plays the ukulele and sings. She often plays near the Red Kettle in front of Dave’s Supermarket, which is one of her favorite activities.

Gentes is the granddaughter of former Citizens of the Year Keith and Lois Coleman.
