Bunting liaison talks to council

The legislative liaison for State Rep. Jason Bunting appeared before members of the Fairbury City Council Wednesday evening.

Randy Irvin has been trying to get to the various board and council meetings in Bunting’s district to introduce himself.

“If you need anything, just give us a call in Dwight,” said Irvin.

Irvin distributed packets to council members with information including contact numbers.

“We need Route 24 through Fairbury concreted,” said Alderman Steve Endres. “We swerve around all of the pot holes.”

Irvin said he could mention it to Bunting.

“(State Senator) Tom Bennett did a lot for us but we need more,” added Endres.

Endres noted Chenoa has concrete on Route 24 through town which is holding up, unlike the road surface through Fairbury.

“There is a plan in place,” noted Mayor David Slagel.

The mayor thanked Irvin for the information and for stopping by the meeting.

In another matter, Police Chief Robert McCormick updated the council on an electronic ticketing system at the Livingston County Circuit Clerk’s office. The office transition to the new system has been underway for some time to improve record keeping and to address issues with illegible citations and timely submission.

According to the chief, the Circuit Clerk’s office agreed to cover the cost of the software program for six years, the hardware needed and the training to become familiar with the program.

“They’re footing the bill mostly,” explained Mayor Slagel.

Slagel said he has concerns over what the cost would be after the first six years.

City Superintendent Brett Ashburn reported the Street Department got lights and decorations up downtown. All of the concrete corners are done but workers have to come back to do patching of the roads and curbs, most likely in the spring.

“When will we have real stop signs again?” asked Alderman Endres.

“We are in the process,” replied Street Superintendent Lonnie Rhoads.

Eventually, work will start on resurfacing Main Street.

The group approved the 2025 council meeting schedule with the January meetings held on the second and fourth Wednesdays, instead of the first and third Wednesdays, due to the first being a holiday. There will not be a council meeting during fair week this year.

Christmas bonuses were approved for city employees. This is based on what the city has given for the last four years.

Council members authorized amendments to the pay ordinance which does away with the A, B and C rates and goes to a straight rate for hires.

An employee health insurance option was approved for Health Alliance with a premium increase but the same plan for employees.

A request from Woody & Bubba’s food truck was approved to park outside of Old City Hall on Locust Street from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Consent agenda items were approved, including the Nov. 20 meeting minutes, voucher invoice register and overtime report.
