After all of these years, the Lions Club bingo tent at the Fairbury Fair is still going strong today.
“The club started it on their own initially and a couple of years later, it expanded to the point where we couldn’t do it ourselves so we asked the local Fairbury VFW to join us,” explains Lions Club member Darryl Tinges.
Bingo was farther east near Floral Hall when it began and later moved to the present location next to the beer garden which is a high-traffic area.
“It is a popular spot on the fairgrounds,” said Tinges.
Fairgoers can enjoy a round or two of bingo daily through Sunday at the fair. This is the Lions Club’s main fundraiser of the year.
“These funds go right back into the community to places like the Boys and Girls Club, food pantry, library summer reading program and an annual scholarship,” Tinges stated.
Membership for the Fairbury Lions Club currently stands at under 30 but they could use more members, according to Tinges. They meet once a month on the first Monday for dinner and a meeting at the Indian Creek Country Club.
“We are always looking for new members,” notes Tinges. “Anybody 18 to whatever age is eligible to become a Fairbury Lions Club member.”
